Eat Tomatoes To Lower Bad Cholesterol

A number of recent studies has revealed the health benefits of tomatoes and tomato products.  These benefits are attributed to the bright red pigment called lycopene which has been found to aid in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

Reviewing fourteen clinical studies conducted in the last 55 years, researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia recently established the exact quantities of lycopene we need in our diets.

Doctors Peter Fakler and Karin Reid concluded that between 25 and 44 milligrams of lycopene can lower cholesterol as well as the most commonly prescribed medications for the condition.  Lycopene in processed tomatoes is absorbed more readily than in the fresh fruit, so eat lots of pasta sauce!

Other fruits containing high quantities of lycopene include watermelon, guava, pink grapefruit and papaw.
